The Disneyland Railroad has been at the park since opening day. Walt Disney had a real love for trains and insisted they be part of his park. You can utilize the train to transport you from land to land or you can go on a Grand Circle Tour of the park (or in other words ride it all the way around).
You can ask the cast members at the train depot for a " tender" ride which means they let you ride up front with the conductor. They only do tender rides on specific days but it doesn't hurt to ask.
There are 4 train depots, Main st., New Orleans Square, Toon Town, and Tomorrowland.
Personally, we use the train when we are tired or when the park is crowded. It is a great way to relax and rest your feet. Use courtesy when riding the train. Slide to the end of your row so people don't have to crawl over you, and keep your arms in the train, because they will ask you to do so.
